Joto Se
‘I have lived for thousands of years. In the scent of the earth and the warmth of the fire. The ebb and flow of the waters and the soft whistles of the air. Carrying the teachings of those who came before, guiding and protecting those who will come after. I have worn many faces, looked on as worlds were built, pulled down and built anew. Watched as things were torn apart and held with loving hands. It is all the beauty of life. Thank you child for this offering.’
Joto Se, Joto [Joh-to] meaning the layer of spirit handed down by the ancestors and Se [Say]meaning the soul, is the visual manifestation of ancestral work. The work hints at Drake's colonial past and Plymouth’s post war utopian ideals through the re-telling of Caribbean folklore. Merging traditional folk practices such as tapestry, handbuilt ceramics and spellwork with moving image the work culminates as an Offering Altar. Offering both healing for and giving thanks to the ancestors and Plymouth.
