The Unnamed Deity and Nithing Pole

Textiles, papier mache, glass, wire, cord and found and personal artefacts, wood, sheep skull. 2024.

The Unnamed Deity is an allusion to the connection between man and nature and the old Gods, and is symbolic of the pagan calendar and traditions such as the May Pole and Morris Dancers.Unnamed Deity is both female and male, child and adult, human and animal. They are guardian and teacher. They are a reminder that we are of this earth, not apart from it, whilst the Nithing Pole is a reminder that our freedoms and rights, so hard won, are easily lost and need to be guarded and fought for.

Burgmans practice revolves around the fragility of nature, our complex relationship with it and the mythology that has arisen from that interaction. Her work references Pagan practices, alchemy, fairy tales and the magic of the everyday.
