Beyond The Binary
It can be hard to imagine a world that isn’t binary, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t. We live in a society that takes away our autonomy over our bodies and identities, prescribing to us what we can and can’t be. It can be difficult to imagine who we would be without these constrictions.
‘Beyond The Binary’ (2024) is a sewn, soft fabric sculpture installation that intentionally uses anatomical visible signifiers to cross heteronormative gender boundaries until they are meaningless. Potter presents to us the possibilities outside of these boundaries, encouraging and creating space for the existence of the other and to realise a reality where they can be themselves in a world that tells them not to be. One in which there is a spectrum of fluidity and not an arbitrary duality.
