Seren Martin
Hiraeth
As an interdisciplinary artist Martin explores themes of archival memory and site responsive work. Her art stems from a deep rooted connection with the land of Martin’s family and ancestors. Having lived in South Wales all her life she has been influenced by its rich history of coal mining, creating work inspired by the ghost of the coal mining industry that Martin sees in the skeletal remains of abandoned pit heads and old rusting wheels that remain in her hometown.
n her most recent work Martin has delved into the history of my hometown the Rhondda Valleys, making short documentary films using archival material. The films play a sequence of old photographs in contrast to the present day footage of Martin’s own trips to the once coal mining sites. Within these short films Martin’s grandfather narrates his childhood stories of growing up in a town unfamiliar to Martin’s present self.
