Sophie Cleverley
‘End of The Line?’
“Imminent loss drives the impulse to record and remember.” - Saltzman, L., (2006). Making Memory Matter. Chicago Press.
“August 16th 2023, 2:50 am. My father, Luke Cleverley passed peacefully in his sleep aged 65” - Sophie Cleverley.
Grief is the driving force of Cleverley’s practice, she utilises her work to memorialise and immortalise her father’s being. This evocative installation is a culmination of honest pieces transformed into an immersive environment. Cleverley uses the symbolism of a station to convey theoretical concepts of the ‘liminal space’ and the transitions and complexities of shared human experience. She questions how memory is an essential category of visual representation and considers an absent, desired body. The collected and the archival is an important factor in her work, exploring empathy within objects, and investigating narratives and histories they hold. Cleverley invites you to take time and interact with the space - answering the phone or reading the books.
